Whether you've been writing for decades, or just started your first book, there's always room to grow. When you sign up for one of my coaching packages, I'll examine your writing to identify the level you're at and hear you out on what you want to achieve, then build a coaching experience that's custom for you.
"Daeus reviewed the piece I sent to him quickly but thoroughly. His comments were clear, easy to understand, and his analysis combined constructive criticism and encouragement well. It showed me what I am doing right, and what I need to fix about my writing. I learned a lot from his review, and it was worth the money I spent on it. I dislike spending money on things like writing or online services, but Daeus’ professional review was invaluable to me. I highly recommend his services."
State of Writing Analysis
Unique packages for your various writing dilemmas
WIP = Work In Progress
Side-By-Side and Group WIP coaching:
I expect all students to be respectful, punctual, and diligent. I reserve the right to end my contract with a student at any time, in which case I will refund them for any unfulfilled coaching sessions. Students may also quit at any time.
All coaching packages (except the state of writing analysis which does not include a meeting between coach and student):
If I or the student are unable to attend a coaching session, we will reschedule, or, if there is no convenient day to reschedule, I will issue a refund. Important: students must issue a notice at least a day in advance if they will be unable to attend a coaching session. Otherwise, they will still be charged for the session, except in cases of true emergencies.
ALSO, unless you plan to do your coaching session over phone or email, please make sure that you have a skype or google account.
Finally, there will be no refund if students arrive late. So make sure to be on time!
Breakthrough and Story Concept Development sessions:
Specific questions are more likely to get specific answers. For instance "my character is in predicament A and he needs to do B, but he can't because he doesn't know the necessary key information—how can I solve this?" is better than "My character is boring—what should I do?" If you know exactly what you need help with, I can get right to the job. If you don't, I'll have to spend half the time identifying the information I'll need to find a solution.
State of Writing Analysis:
For this package, I'll need an excerpt of your writing of up to 3,000 words.
All coaching packages:
Not being a limitless commodity, while I try to book applicants as soon as I can, I'm occasionally swamped and may have to put you on a waiting list. 🙂
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
Editors critique your book after it is finished. I work on developing your story, characters, and prose as you write. This means I can catch plot holes before they ruin a story. I can help you get your prose right on the first draft, so you don't have to do so much rewriting on the second draft. While editors will be mainly focused on making your book publishable, I will be mainly focused on making you a great writer, with the skills to handle this book and all future ones you write.
That said, editors are fantastic and necessary. I highly recommend you go track down a good one.
I fully acknowledge that there are better writers than I. Based on all the published books I've read, I personally believe I could offer most published authors some small assistance by way of coaching, if less than I would offer a developing author. However, there are geniuses who would be better off coaching me than the other way around.
On the State of Writing Analysis, you take a risk. If you're a near perfect writer, it might not help you much.
With the Story Concept Development Package and the Breakthrough Package, you enter with a stated problem you need fixed and if I don't believe I'll be able to help you, I'll decline to coach you.
Similarly, with the WIP coaching, I will not accept a student I consider too advanced for me to coach.
No. My prices are fair, and about what you would pay for a coach/tutor in may other fields like math or music.
If price is an issue, you might get some friends together and try my group coaching plan.
I only accept students I think I can genuinely help and I give every student my best. Therefore, I only offer refunds if I feel I have been far less helpful than I anticipated: for instance, if I agreed to do a breakthrough session with you to work on a plot hole and end dry on ideas. I will also offer refunds if I am, for some reason, unable to attend a scheduled meeting.
On a rotating basis, I'll focus each session particularly on one student's WIP. As I critique his or her particular work, I'll be teaching story concepts and principles that the other students can glean from.
I generally like to meet over Skype or Google Hangouts, but if you live in an area with poor wifi, we can also do the meeting over the phone. Additionally, if you don't like the pressure of a one-on-one call, you can ask me to do the coaching through google docs. Note though that this will be inefficient and I may still want to send you voice clips as a quick way for me to convey large amounts of information quickly.
With WIP coaching, as long as it okay with the student, I may occasionally spend part of the hour reading over their manuscript before hopping on the call to discuss my thoughts.
I naturally tend to be encouraging, though if I spot a way your writing could be improved, I will point it out. I want to press you to be everything you can be. I come prepared to every coaching session, also ready to change gears and focus on another topic if a better teaching opportunity arises.
In addition to novels, I'll also work with short stories and scripts for films or plays—any form of storytelling.
